Hello
I am Dr. Elizabeth Scriven, a licensed Psychologist in the State of Washington. I was born with Spina Bifida, as a result I am a T10-T11 paraplegic who identifies as Disabled and uses a wheelchair for my mobility. I believe that ableism is alive and well, though rarely talked about. I also believe that by sharing stories we can all learn, grow and heal. Through my project I am creating space for Disabled voices to get out and be heard.
My Story
I am Dr. Elizabeth Scriven, a licensed Psychologist in the State of Washington. I was born with Spina Bifida and as a result I am a T10-T11 paraplegic. I identify as Disabled (rather than a person with a disability) and use a wheelchair for my mobility. I live an active life full of time with my friends & family, I participate in sports and outdoor activities, enjoy my pets, reading, artsy/crafts projects, service work, and learning.
I attribute my passion about disability issues such as inclusion, accessibility, access to mental/physical health care, and empowerment to two influences. First, my family who encouraged me to be independent and taught me how to self-advocate from an early age. The second influence is my education with its emphasis in social justice. I feel that educating others with disabilities, their allies, professionals who serve those with disability, as well as the general public on a variety of disability issues is the key element needed to bring about great social change.
I have been a Mental Health Therapist since 2012, I currently work in Community Mental Health serving those who are underserved. Over the years, I have worked in many settings including Hospital Rehabilitation, various outpatient clinics, and Community Mental Health. Prior to working as a Mental Health Therapist, I worked in Therapeutic Recreation and Adaptive Fitness with people of all abilities. In all of these settings, I have served a variety of people of different ages, abilities, and backgrounds. I am passionate about leading an active healthful life and through my work have been able to encourage other people, with and without disability, to explore personal interests, wellness, fitness, and hobbies. I have gotten to watch as they enrich their lives and find wellness. With this project, I look forward to enriching your life by giving you an opportunity to not only find your voice but have it heard as it influences the disability advocacy movement.
